Hits Houston
On August 27, 2017, it was
almost noon and no one could
reach my dad. I stayed up
all night watching the news
(KTRK Ch.13) and checking
the water levels of the Hunt-
ing Bayou. The bayou runs less
than a block from my family’s
homes. We jokingly call the
area that encompasses two lots
on Kashmere Street and two
lots on Wipprecht Street the
Compound. Within this area,
my father, mother, two sisters,
brother-in-law, aunt, cousin
and some renters live. I used
to li ve in one of the houses
there when Hurricane Allison
hit in 2001. Hurricane Harvey
brought back painful memories.
