R epublic of H aiti is located between the A tlantic O cean and the C arib -
bean S ea where it shares one - third of the island of H ispaniola with the D omini -
can R epublic . T he original native T aino people named the island A yiti , which means
“ land of high mountains ” before their population was decimated by E uropean set -
tlers and partitioned by F rance and S pain . F rench and C reole are the official H ai -
tian languages and mutually understandable , while C hristianity and V odun are
the primary religious expressions . T he population of over 10 million is of primar -
ily A frican descent and mostly urban , with a fairly even distribution across the
country , while coastal areas contain the largest concentrations . C itizenship is by
descent , whereby at least one parent must have been born in H aiti .
