Known for its friendly smiling people, great hospitality, white sandy beaches and beautiful sunshine, Barbados has evolved into a kaleidoscope of people, activities and events. The island has become an idyllic destination with a number of tourist attractions that are suited to visitors of all ages and interests, ranging from former plantations, historical museums and churches to annual festivals, breathtaking nature sites, and botanical gardens. In addition to its reputation as one of the premier holiday destinations in the world, Barbados is recognized as one of the top developing countries worldwide. The nation has developed and enjoys a reputation as one of the world’s leading international business centers due to its legislative framework and stable business infrastructure that encourages foreign investment. As a typical Caribbean country, Barbados has more nationals living outside of the country than its current local population. Additionally, many are choosing to return upon retirement, while some are already contributing to the economic development of their country through remittances and formal investments. A famous Barbadian in the entertainment field who is also making a tangible impact in her birthplace is Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty, winner or several international awards for her music, including the US Grammy. What also began in Barbados as their largest street fair, Bridgetown Market and the Crop Over Festival each summer has been expanded by the government to include an international road show of arts, crafts, fashion, music, food, and drinks … Of course, this includes their world famous rum. Houston once hosted Bridgetown Market, this outstanding cultural and trade event, as part of the International Festival or IFest. Congratulations to the Houston community of Barbadians and the Barbados Association of Texas on their 50th Anniversary of Independence from Britain as they continue to honor their ancestors and culture with local scholarships and cultural outreach! Marilyn Douglas-Jones is a professor of English & Foreign Languages in Houston and founder of the Caribbean Impact Network. iF Magazine | www.iFMagazine.net 27
