60th Anniversary of the
Hungarian Freedom Fight Memorial
“The First Nail in the Coffin of Communism”
On November 30, 2016, the Hungarian American Cultural Association
(HACA) of Houston, the Honorary Consul General of Hungary in Texas in
partnership with the University of Houston Downtown hosted a memorial
and opening for a photography exhibition of rare photos commemorating
the 60th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. Speakers and honored
guests were Richard Graber, President HACA and Phillip Aronoff, Honorary
Consul General of Hungary.
In 1956, Hungarian students staged what was to be a peaceful protest against
the occupying Soviet forces. They were joined in their march by workers.
When the Soviet forces moved in to stop the protest, some policemen furnished the students with weapons and the first shots of the Revolution were
fired. The tiny Hungarian nation took on the mighty Soviet Union at a time
when the Soviets were considered unbeatable, a modern-day David and Goliath struggle. The freedom fighters held on for 13 days as the World celebrated
their courage. On November 4, the Soviets returned and crushed the Revolution and at that time, the dreams of freedom for the Hungarian people.
