Just don’t pay the ransom
The biggest problem with ransomware
is the fact it works differently to other
forms of malware and, therefore,
bypasses all the rules we’d previously
followed when dealing with malware.
Worse still, there is very little you can
do once you’ve been infected by
ransomware. In some cases, flaws in the
code and encryption process may offer
a lifeline if security researchers have
identified those flaws and developed
decryption tools. But that can’t be
relied on.
But whatever you do, do not pay the
ransom. There is no guarantee that the
extortionist will keep to their word and
give your files back, plus it only serves
to reinforce what they are doing. The
only way to protect yourself is to have
robust cybersecurity in place. Start with
an antivirus with active monitoring
and layer on other applications that
are specifically designed to thwart
these advanced attacks. As long as it’s
profitable for malware creators to keep
developing ransomware, this epidemic
shows no signs of slowing down.
The best option for consumers and
businesses for avoiding ransomware
will continue to be to invest in a strong
defence. ¢
