Saudi science community gets
cloud backup system
The Internet Services Unit (ISU) of King Abdulaziz City for
Science and Technology (KACST), a government entity that
co-ordinates and promotes scientific and technological research
in Saudi Arabia, has deployed the Veeam® Availability Suite™.
This will provide the science community in Saudi Arabia
with 24.7.365 access to critical data for research that fosters
innovation and promotes a knowledge-based society.
Business continuity plays a key role in fostering
technological advancements that will make Saudi Arabia
a leader in scientific knowledge and practice. Veeam lets
ISU spend less time on backup and recovery and more
time supporting scientific research and business continuity
among the organisations it serves. By integrating with
VMware VRealize Suite, the Availability Suite from Veeam
automates Backup as a Service (BaaS) delivered by ISU,
so that organisations in the science community can
manage their own backup operations, including adding and
removing virtual machines from backup jobs and restoring
to a specific point in time.
The two most important components of science and
innovation are people and data. Therefore, KACST created the
Internet Services Unit (ISU) to provide people in the science
community with 24.7.365 access to data. Without 24.7.365
access, they can’t carry out their collaborative research and
develop solutions that improve society.

STC increases wifi
coverage for pilgrims
The Saudi Telecom Company (STC) increased its mobile data
coverage to serve pilgrims leaving the holy city of Mecca for
Mount Arafat. extended coverage included tunnels, bridges and a number
of public utilities in Mina which served pilgrims starting their
Tarwiah Day.
The company increased its coverage in Makkah and the
Holy Sites utilising the latest mobile technologies. Its This year STC faced higher demand for mobile data so it
increased its wifi spots around Makkah and Madinah by
206% compared to the previous year. This enabled a high-
speed data flow for pilgrims, as well as for those using the
service for work, as millions of Muslims began the first day of
Hajj Rites.
To improve the service levels it offers, STC enhanced its 4G
network in and around the central regions of Makkah and
Madinah, as well as the Holy Sites, to allow a better flow of
mobile data services.
Users of the service were also able to take advantage of
a special offer from STC. For the first time the company
ran a special offer promoting ‘SAWA Ziyara’ SIM cards for
this year’s Hajj season. The cards were available from the
company, which offers landline, mobile and internet services,
from 336 sales outlets around the kingdom.
