NEWS Siemens Portugal invests €20 million in digitisation by 2020 Portugal takes part in Europol’s 12th Referral Action Day O n November 29, 2018, Europol’s European Union Internet Referral Unit (EU IRU) organised its 12th joint Referral Action Day with the national referral units of seven Member States and third parties, including Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Portugal and the United Kingdom. This joint action was coordinated from Europol’s headquarters in The Hague and targeted online material linked to terrorist activities. During the Referral Action Day, the parties involved thoroughly reviewed the referral process, from the detection of terrorist content, to its flagging, to the online service providers. The focus of this continuous initiative included the detection and referral of terrorist content from 10 file sharing platforms. A total amount of 7,393 items were assessed and referred to the participating online platforms with a request to be reviewed against their terms of service. S iemens Portugal will invest another €20 million in digitisation over the next two years. The announcement was made by Pedro Pires de Miranda, CEO of Siemens Portugal, in the presence of Prime Minister, António Costa, and Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira. In June of this same year, the company had already announced an investment of five million euros to boost this area in Portugal, thus dedicating a total of €25 million to the digitisation of the country. Pedro Siza Vieira, Minister of Economy, said: “This new Siemens investment in Portugal, in an area as important as digitisation, reinforces the multinational’s commitment to the skills of our talents which also have a strong export capacity in this area, creating value in the new economy.” 10 INTELLIGENTCIO Pedro Pires de Miranda, CEO of Siemens, said: “This investment reinforces the strategy we have defined for this area in Portugal. In the first half of the year, we announced that we were going to invest five million in digitisation. Now we have the great satisfaction of being able to announce that we are going to invest five times more. There are 25 million euros linked to digitisation, an investment that will greatly benefit the national economy.” Europol promotes cooperative relations to combat terrorist online propaganda. Similar joint actions will continue to be organised frequently. Based within Europol’s European Counter Terrorism Centre (ECTC), the EU IRU detects and investigates terrorist content on the Internet. Furthermore, the Unit produces strategic insights into jihadist terrorism and provides support to law enforcement authorities in the EU Member States in online criminal investigations. A quarter of this investment will be directed towards the complete renovation and modernisation of a building, to respond to the new concepts of work, betting on spaces of co-creation and ideation, while the remaining €15 million will be applied in the creation of 400 new posts of work in the area of IT by 2020. www.intelligentcio.com
