SAN environment, staff were identifying
and tuning each VM. This time is now spent
driving business value and staff are able to
deal with newer projects instead of spending
the increased visibility we need. It’s
incredibly easy to see the behaviour of
each application and pinpointing any
latency and bottleneck issues is simple.

up to 40% of their time dealing with
performance-related queries. “That 40% has
gone down to zero with environments that
run on Tintri. This has been a huge benefit
and we don’t have any performance-related
issues we need to deal with,” Mangera said.
Analytics improves forecasting
Tintri has also made the case for the
technology even more compelling with
SyncVM, analytics and machine learning.
This makes it easier to place VMs where they
are best suited for performance. “In terms of
forecasting our growth and trends, analytics
is immensely valuable,” Mangera revealed.
High availability and DR
Tintri’s introduction of replication, disaster
recovery (DR) and high availability features
fits perfectly with the Trust’s new updated
DR strategy. “As a hospital and major trauma
centre, it is vital that we have a highly
available environment in order to deliver our
services as a healthcare organisation as well
as a major trauma centre,” Mangera stated.
Since deploying Tintri, the Trust has
experienced no downtime. “We’ve been
running for three and a half years without any
downtime,” Mangera said. “I would absolutely
recommend Tintri to other people.”
We asked Yusef Mangera further questions
about how the system has benefitted the Trust.
Has the implementation of the
system given you increased
visibility into your operations?
If so, how?
Definitely. Tintri is designed to operate
at the VM level, which provides us with
70
INTELLIGENTCIO
Previously, our systems were complex and
extremely difficult to manage. Our IT staff
were spending a lot of time managing
the IT and identifying any issues was a
difficult and time-consuming task. Tintri
has not only simplified the whole process
by providing full visibility down to the VM-
level, but it has also absorbed a lot of the
management tasks.
We are also benefitting from Tintri’s
SyncVM, analytics and machine learning,
which makes the solution even more
compelling. This makes it easier to place VMs
where they are best suited for performance.
We can also forecast our growth and trends,
with predicated visibility into how our data
will look over the next 18 months.
How does the new
system integrate with
your existing systems?
Tintri has been simple from the start; the set
up and migration was easy and the support
team was on hand in case we had any issues.
By moving all of our VMware and Hyper-V
storage requirements to Tintri, the Trust
has been able to reallocate more of its
SAN storage resources to focus on physical
servers, file services and NAS environments.
Tintri has also introduced a number of
new features including replication, Disaster
Recovery (DR) and high availability, which
fits in perfectly with the Trust’s new updated
DR strategy.
Do patients benefit from the
new system and if so, how?
It’s vital that the Trust’s IT systems can
keep up and running 24/7. Although
patients do not directly see the impact of
Tintri, our IT strategy plays a fundamental
role in day-to-day operations. It is vital that
we have a highly available environment to
deliver our services.
It’s also essential that the Trust makes the
best use of its staff and Tintri has enabled
us to automate a lot of the management
process, allowing us to focus on driving
value elsewhere.
We operate 24 hours a day and there
is a huge amount of pressure from an
administration point of view in terms of
troubleshooting, managing, tweaking
and tuning, but with Tintri that’s all done
automatically for us. Tintri has enabled our
staff to focus their time and expertise on
other services and core patient objectives,
rather than spending 40% of their time
on low-level trivial administration tasks.
Tintri does all of the troubleshooting and
managing for us and our staff haven’t had
to look into any performance-related issues
for over three years.
Were there any obstacles
you had to overcome when
implementing the new solution?
We haven’t had any obstacles with Tintri.
The experience has been positive right from
the very start. We were confident in the
technology along with its performance and
implementation time.
The solution takes care of itself with little or
no fine-tuning and troubleshooting needed.
What sort of operational
efficiencies does the
solution provide?
The Trust is committed to delivering
the best quality care to its patients
and the technology we use plays a vital
role in supporting this. We wanted a
storage solution that could provide the
performance and capacity required to
support our virtualised infrastructure and
working with Tintri means we experience
consistent, high availability.
Even during scheduled maintenance times,
the Trust’s systems remain up and running
and reliable, which is vital for us to be able to
provide the care that our patients require. n
