EDITOR’S NOTE
W
elcome to the latest edition of
Intelligent CIO Europe where this
month, we feature the Scottish
Government Agriculture and Rural Economy
(ARE) Directorate on the cover. Neill Smith,
Head of IT infrastructure for the Scottish
Government ARE, explains how Pure Storage’s
solution was implemented into its system.
As a government body, it is top priority that
the Scottish Government ARE is able to
manage, store and process data without any
downtime. Smith and his team quickly realised
that an all-flash array was the correct solution
and the team selected Pure Storage to provide
long-term flexibility and sustainability.
Subsequently, with the help of Pure’s
seamless implementation, the directorate
is now able to upgrade its storage capacity
more efficiently with no extra cost. The team
are now confident they are able to meet
future storage requirements and comply
with evolving technology demands.
The modernisation of technology is at the
forefront of everyone’s minds in this digital
age and the manufacturing sector are
revelling in all its glory. Manufacturers are
utilising modern technology such as AI and
ML and an expert from Cognizant tells us,
on page 90, how businesses can integrate

robot co-workers into the workplace to reap
the benefits.
Advances in technology are also a driving
force behind the healthcare sector – the
focus of our ‘Intelligent Vertical’ for this
month. The healthcare sector is able to
flourish thanks to technologies such as
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Big Data,
allowing for more efficient and flexible ways
of working. Such technologies make room
for continuous and accurate monitoring of
patient heart rates, for example, increasing
the levels of consistency within the sector.
challenging them is the Internet of Things
(IoT). We hear from three industry experts for
our ‘Editor’s Question’, who inform us of the
implications users should be aware of when
utilising this type of modern technology.
Speaking to us are: Sam Curry, Chief Security
Officer at Cybereason; Stephen Moore, Chief
Security Strategist at Exabeam; and Steve
Mulhearn, Director of Enhanced Technologies,
Fortinet. Each contributor offers their
perspective on IoT in relation to public safety,
weak passwords and undertaking a detailed
review of potential strategies for attack.
As in many cases, consistency is key and
people in this day and age demand nothing
less. People expect to work in a consistently
secure environment and Pulse Secure’s
CEO talks to us exclusively about how the
company can provide secure access to
customers in a hybrid IT environment.
For this issue’s ‘Tech Talk’, Sudhakar
Ramakrishna talks about the benefits of
switching to cloud and SaaS compared
to using on-premise; the main security
challenges companies might face when
utilising hybrid IT; and how the traditional
approach differs from a hybrid IT one. To round off this issue, we ‘Get to Know’
Simon Weeks, CEO of Maginus, who tells us
how he likes to relax and unwind outside of
the office.

are benefiting from but one that is also Alix Pressley
