EDITOR’S
NOTE
W
elcome to Issue 8 of
Intelligent CIO Africa. This
month’s cover story comes
from our ‘Industry Watch’, which is
focused on telecoms, and looks at
the ways in which Vodafone Egypt
is utilising Ericsson’s cloud-based
platform to enable their journey towards
virtualisation and cloud transformation.
As part of the telecoms industry feature
we look at the development of 5G in
Africa, exploring the potential benefits
of deployment as well as the current
limitations. One of the greatest gains
from 5G will be the acceleration of
IoT, the possibilities of which are
transformational for any region. In
this issue’s ‘Tech Talk’ section, Kelly
Preston, Data Analytics Manager at
SilverBridge, discusses in particular the
transformation IoT will have in the area
of data analytics, along with AI.
Recently released Mozilla-backed
research revealed that significant barriers
to Internet access remain in Africa.
Focusing on Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda
and South Africa, the research looked
at the differences in the use of and

perception of Internet between male and
female users, those from urban and rural
locations and new and non-Internet users.
We further explore Internet use in
Nigeria in this month’s ‘Country Focus’,
which despite being the most connected
African country, is estimated to only be
putting to use 10–15% of the nation’s
incoming submarine cable capacity.

With GITEX Technology Week 2017
just around the corner, we look at
which countries will be driving regional
participation at this year’s event.
Following a successful attendance in
2016 and continued sponsorship from
the ITIDA, Egypt will be participating as
will Nigeria, with a focus on the digital
transformation of the country’s oil and
gas sector.
For our ‘Editor’s Question’ we talk to
industry experts from Sage and VMWare
about the current state of public
cloud in Africa amongst organisations
prioritising simplicity, costs and security.
