As one of the largest metros in South Africa, the City of Cape Town is tasked with providing around 880 million litres of clean, safe drinking water on a daily basis to residents, businesses and industries, as well as effectively collecting and treating wastewater from the city. This requires world-class management of water catchment areas and appropriate storage and treatment of wastewater to ensure a healthy and safe community for all residents. Therefore, to support its water and sanitation efforts, the City of Cape Town implemented a comprehensive mobile solution for the automation of asset management and field service processes, which is the focus of this month’s cover story. We hear from Peter Flower, Director of Water and Sanitation for the City of Cape Town, who explains how SAP Work Manager has empowered its workforce with digital tools to more efficiently install, inspect, maintain and repair water and sanitation assets. The technology has enabled workers to access, complete and manage their assigned work orders and service requests via their mobile devices, with the mobile www.intelligentcio.com Power is critical Energy supply industry in South Africa is experiencing a new dawn A DIGITAL PRIORITY To support its water and sanitation efforts, the City of Cape Town implemented a solution that enables workers to access, complete and manage their assigned work orders and service requests via their mobile devices. Rhino poaching is currently a hot topic, with many of the animals being shot dead. To try and combat this, South African businesswoman Colleen Glaeser has incorporated Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence to alert operators in the control room to an immediate poaching threat, which we hear about in country focus. He broke these down to: service portfolio management; project portfolio management; demand response; resource management; and project management. Glaeser, who is the Global Marketing Director for tech security company AxxonSoft, explains how, prior to the incorporation of Deep Learning in anti-poaching surveillance, software often failed control rooms and response units in that false alarms were, on many occasions, set off by animals, insects and the weather. However, thanks to the new technology, an alarm now only goes off if it picks up a human and not an animal. Glaeser says the rangers now feel more equipped because they know where to go and it won’t be a false alarm. Having an effective IT Service Management System (ITSM) enables organisations to deliver and control the services they offer to customers. In our first feature this month, which can read from page 38, we spoke to Mark Ackerman, Regional Director, MESAT Ackerman added that a strong ITSM solution will elevate the service experience; improve IT productivity; achieve new insights; and consolidate IT insights. To round off the magazine, we hear from Harish Chib, Vice President, Middle East and Africa, Sophos, who explains in final word how you can prevent your network from becoming a Botnet. He says the most effective ingredient is the organisation’s network firewall and offers tips on how this can be protected.
