elcome to another exciting
edition of Intelligent CIO Africa. A
fast Wi-Fi service is important to
many people attending stadiums to ensure
they have a full-on experience. This month’s
cover story therefore focuses on the Golden
Jubilee Independence Day event that was
recently held in Botswana. To enable that
good connectivity was available, Botswana
Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) contracted Ruckus
to provide the service at two stadia – the
National Stadium in Gaborone, which has
a capacity of 24,000 – and the Francistown
Stadium (capacity 27,000). It is pleasing to
hear that the commitment of both teams
ensured the project was completed in a
very short time frame and good project
management skills were key to its success.
Our latest country focus is Ghana, which
has grown rapidly in recent years, with
new buildings appearing almost overnight.
Birenda Sasmal, the CEO of Susbaj, explains
how technology has been used to carry out
the largest mass household data collection
and building mapping exercise in African
history. The huge project – which is set to
be completed by June – will include all the
metropolitan and municipal areas in Ghana,
which make up about 62% of the built-up
land mass.

And it has ensured that the Western African
country has set a blueprint that other
countries, not only in Africa but around the
world, can follow.
One of our features this month focuses on
independently owned logistics company
Bakers S.A. Limited, which serves all
southern African countries, boasting more
than 1,500 employees. However, with
growth and expansion came challenges.
Therefore, the company worked alongside
Epicor ERP to review relevant enterprise
resource planning systems and concluded
that its latest version would not only serve
the business challenges faced today but
would also enable future growth.
We also feature redPanda Software, which
has created innovative software that seeks to
boost productivity and output by providing
transparency and visibility. The Novum
enterprise management system illustrates
how corporate culture impacts product
development and what sets it apart is its
ability to make measurable improvements
in customer service, productivity and
communication across the entire organisation.
