SOUTH AFRICA
Kathu Solar Park is being developed in the Northern
Cape Province, 600 km south west of Pretoria. It is a
greenfield 100-megawatt Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)
project with parabolic trough technology and equipped with a
molten salt storage system that allows four-and-a-half hours of
thermal energy storage. Once in operation, Kathu Solar Park will
have the capacity to supply 80,000 households across South
Africa and will help reduce carbon emissions by 300,000
tonnes every year. The parabolic trough technology
operates by tracking the sun with the parabolic reflectors
and focusing the sun’s rays into an absorber pipe.
