PROJECT UPDATE LATEST REGIONAL PROJECT UPDATE EGYPT An electrical interconnection is being constructed between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The project will include creating a transmission line to transfer gas between the two countries at peak times for each country, at a maximum of 3,000 MW. The line will also be used for an electricity trade exchange, especially during the winter. The 500 kV DC interconnection between both grids, which are the largest in the Southern Mediterranean region, starts at Badr in Egypt passing by Tabuk and ends at El-Madinah El Munawara in Saudi Arabia. The project consists of three rectifier stations, in Badr-Egypt and in Tabuk and El-Madinah El Munawara in Saudi Arabia. The rectifier station is connected by overhead High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)Lines with the length of 1300 km and a submarine cable passing by Gulf of Aqaba for the direct interconnection of both grids. GUINEA A bauxite mine is to be developed at Sangared in the Boké region. Bauxite is the ore from which most of the world’s aluminium is derived. Material mined at the facility will be refined into alumina feed stock for smelters. The project will have an annual production capacity of 12 million tonnes and will also include a dedicated export terminal at Port Kamsar and upgrades to existing rail infrastructure for in-land logistics. 26 INTELLIGENTCIO www.intelligentcio.com
