One of the most important expectations of technology is that it is reliable, especially in the event of an emergency. This month’s cover story is therefore music to the ears of anyone who will need prompt medical treatment. Serving a population of over six million and covering an area of almost 130,000 square kilometres, the Western Cape Department of Health is one of the largest ambulance services in South Africa. And as Dr Shaheem de Vries of the West Cape Government explains, it is critical to get the right people to the right place, at the right time. This month’s country focus looks at how Kenya is well positioned to ride the technological wave to transform businesses, governments and citizens. One of Africa’s biggest problems is that only around 5–10% of the population is extremely wealthy, with the rest struggling to meet minimum living requirements. It is therefore humbling to hear how technology can be a strong enabler to try and bridge this gap and put the continent on a firm development path. Therefore, to ensure it delivers a more efficient emergency response, the West Cape Government has sought help from Dimension Data, which has implemented a call-taking and dispatch solution. One example, explains Corine Mbiaketcha Nana, from Oracle, is Safaricom’s mobile money service, M-PESA, which is making roaring success driving financial inclusion in Kenya. Its ecosystem has already lifted about 194,000 households from extreme poverty and it is these kinds of economic actions that have earned Kenya the moniker ‘Silicon Savannah’, which could progressively translate into narrowing the gap between Africa’s rich and poor. It’s good to hear that it is supporting Western Cape EMS’s six emergency control centres and new mobile devices in its ambulances, having created a hosted infrastructure on its private Challenge cloud platform for centralised deployment. We are all aware that digital technologies are transforming our world at an alarming rate. Artificial intelligence (AI) can play a vital role in ensuring businesses can achieve digitalisation. IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS | LATEST INTELLIGENCE | REGIONAL IMPLEMENTATIONS the impact AI has on our everyday lives. One of the concerns that many businesses have is cyberthreats and what they can do to alleviate them. In ‘Tech Talk’, Roland Daccache, Senior Regional Sales Engineer MENA, Fidelis Cybersecurity, believes an Automated Detection and Response (ADR) approach should be used because it is based on a purpose-built platform designed to deliver validated conclusions about attacks, intrusions and compromises at any stage of the attack life cycle, while also automating the response capability to those attacks. Daccache adds that the new-thinking ADP enables new metrics that drive results, which not only impact the security posture, but also the bottom line of the business.
