elcome to Issue 12 of Intelligent
CIO Africa. With the beginning
of a new year we are bringing a
fresh look to Intelligent CIO Africa.
Throughout the magazine, as well as a sharp
new design, you’ll notice some new features.
One of these new features is ‘CIO Opinion’,
a section where we gain valuable insight
from a CIO on a topic of their choosing. To
begin the year, Yousuf Khan, CIO at Pure
Storage, tells us why a public cloud strategy
is part of the strategy for MEA organisations,
but it’s not the strategy.
With a new year comes both new
opportunity and new challenges for
businesses. As we leave behind a turbulent
2017 for cybersecurity, we ask industry
experts from BeyondTrust, J2 Software, CA
Southern Africa and Mimecast how they
predict cybersecurity strategies will change
in the year ahead.
BankservAfrica modernised the way it
protects its ever-growing data with Veeam’s
Backup and Replication solution. For this
month’s cover story, BankservAfrica’s CTO,
Hamman Ferreira, tells Intelligent CIO Africa
how Veeam’s solution saved the company
50% in backup costs and enables them to

meet stringent SLAs with customers. With
smart cities, IoT and artificial intelligence all
pegged as the technology trends of 2018,
Adebayo Sanni, Managing Director at Oracle
Nigeria looks at how Nigeria will adopt the
backbone of such technologies, the cloud.
For this month’s ‘Country Focus’ feature,
Sanni explains how Nigeria can become the
hotbed of technological innovation in Africa
by maximising cloud use for agility, quicker
deployment and competitive pricing. offers advice for those aspiring to a C-level
position in the cybersecurity industry.
Another new feature going forward is
‘Intelligent Vertical’, an industry-focused
section beginning this month with trade
and logistics. SAP claims that, “If Africa is to
play a meaningful role in world trade and
benefit from the rapid global growth, its sea
ports will be key to ensuring that success”.
In this feature, Kirenga Rwigema, Industry
Value Advisor for Ports and Rail at SAP Africa,
looks at ways in which African ports are
utilising technology to achieve performance
improvements and help contribute to the
continent’s economic success. Any contributions going forward should be
sent to [email protected].
This will be my final Editor’s Note as I am
moving on from Lynchpin Media. I’d like
to take this opportunity to thank you all for
reading the magazine and for the valuable
contributions I have received during my time
as Editor. It’s been a pleasure meeting and
talking with you and I wish you all success
and happiness for 2018.
