HUB LEARNING COMMUNITY CONFERENCE The first annual Hub Learning Community Conference was held in August 2016. The 2-day conference was a huge success and brought together almost 200 professionals who support people living with co-occurring mental health issues and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Attendees enjoyed interactive workshops on topics such as de-escalation techniques and common illnesses of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The conference also featured keynote speakers who discussed Trauma-Informed Care and how to effectively work with the population by understanding the root of challenging behaviors. INTEGRAL CARE ON PBS In June 2016, our Chronic Disease Management (CDM) team was featured in the Stories of the Mind series on KLRU. Created by the Mental Health Channel, the series offers a fresh perspective on mental health and wellness, sharing true stories of people across the nation who live with mental illness. The episode, Complete Care, showed our team working with a client to improve her overall health. People with serious mental illness die, on average, 25 years earlier than the general population due to treatable, chronic medical conditions. “If I hadn’t gotten into the CDM program, I’d be pretty miserable. I just know it wouldn’t be this good. Feeling better physically helps you feel better emotionally. It’s the two sides of your body tying together.” – Heather, Integral Care Client COMMUNITY FORUMS Integral Care hosted two community forums focused on critical issues. The Stepping Up: Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health Forum was held in October 2015 and explored positive solutions local collaborations can create when mental health and criminal justice systems intersect. The Opioid Epidemic Forum, held in May 2016, addressed the misuse of opioids, an epidemic communities are facing nationwide. Opioids, which include prescription painkillers and heroin, kill an estimated 30,000 people per year in the U.S. 12
