Throughout history, many cultures have practiced tiling at various levels of complexity, from abstract geometrical works to detailed representations of life.
Tessellations have also been found in the artistic elements of numerous other ancient cultures including the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian and Arabic empires. The Alhambra, in Spain, an Islamic palace built in the mid 13th century is extensively ornamented with at least 14 distinct tile patterns.
