PENTOMINOES

Pentominoes are a set of 12 shapes (which respectively resemble the letters F, I, L, N, P, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z) each made up of 5 unit squares/cubes which are all connected by their edges/faces.

Solomon W. Golomb coined the term “pentomino” from the Ancient Greek πέντε (‘pénte’-meaning five) plus the -‘omino’ (from domino).

Like tangrams, pentominoes can be used to form different figures as well as rectangles/cubes. For example, using all the pieces, 3x20, 4x15, 5x12 and 6x10 rectangales can be formed
