I am a recent graduate from USD and my degree is in Visual Arts. Art has always been a passion of mine that could not be stifled. In the fall, I am beginning a Masters in Photography program at the Royal College of Art in London, UK. During my time at USD, I have always been involved in Outdoor Adventures. I went on a Pre-Orientation Adventure before my first year and was hooked on the program ever since. I knew that I needed to be a guide and followed that dream.

Outdoor Adventures has really expanded my mind when it comes to photography. It has brought me to some of the most beautiful places in my region. When I arrive, sometimes I think that there is no way that I can capture everything that makes the place so special, but I still have to try. I push myself to really understand the essence of the places I’m in and convey that through my photographs. Often times this means waking up extra early or staying up extra late to catch the best lighting or thousands of stars. In the end, its worth it when I can sit down and look at the photographs that I have taken.

Digital photography has enabled me to push the boundaries of my skills by learning on the go, but film still holds a huge place in my heart. There is something extra special about photographing in a medium that is much more hands on. I cannot rely on automatic light meters or focusing. It forces me to slow down and be careful with the images I choose to capture. Film also adds the extra element of surprise. There is no way for me to see the images while I am on the trip. I have to wait until I’m back in front country and can get in the darkroom. As I develop these images, I am extra careful. I don’t want to lose these precious memories. Eventually the special moment comes when I can see my images slowly appear in the developer. Instantly, I am brought back to the wilderness and the moment I took the photo.
