People in different cities walk or run part of the relay to raise money for their local chil- dren’s hospital. Marriott’s Residence Inn Maui-Wailea hosted Hawai‘i’s Torch Relay segment that brought together teams, friends and ‘ohana to support Kapi‘olani. One of the biggest cheerleaders was Maui’s own Ashlyn Melcher. Because of a rare case of Hydrops Fetalis, excessive fluid in her body and lungs, Ashlyn was born with a one percent chance of survival.
