Torch Relay is a unique
multi-day event that spans
the country. People in
different cities walk or run
part of the relay to raise money for their local chil-
dren’s hospital. Marriott’s Residence Inn Maui-Wailea
hosted Hawai‘i’s Torch Relay segment that brought
together teams, friends and ‘ohana to support
Kapi‘olani. One of the biggest cheerleaders was
Maui’s own Ashlyn Melcher. Because of a rare case
of Hydrops Fetalis, excessive fluid in her body and
lungs, Ashlyn was born with a one percent chance
of survival. She is now a thriving musician and athlete
because of the care she received at Kapi‘olani. The
Torch Relay raised more than $19,000 for Kapi‘olani
