PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
W e all hope our loved ones will never have to deal with a medical emergency . But if and when they do , Wilcox Medical Center staff will be prepared . Wilcox recently unveiled a new simulation lab . The lab features high-tech manikins that the nurses , medical team and staff will use to practice procedures they rarely see , such as high-risk births and sepsis , in a realistic and risk-free environment . Wilcox ’ s location and responsibility as the primary stroke center and trauma center for the island means many critically sick and injured patients come from all over the island seeking care .
The Sim Lab has already proven invaluable for staff education , and ultimately patient care . “ We recently trained ICU staff on critical , life-saving equipment we have only used a few times ,” said Wilcox nurse educator Joey Stearns . “ That refresher was well timed as we had a patient come into the hospital just three days later in need of that very equipment .”
The Wilcox lab features five simulation manikins including a child , a man and a woman known as “ Sim Mom ” that simulates various birthing complications and includes a newborn manikin . The manikins are linked to a state-of-the-art training system that nurse educators can use to make the manikins exhibit various symptoms , conditions and care responses for the most realistic experience possible .
Donations helped create this learning environment that helps medical professionals react seamlessly in emergency situations . “ The generosity of donors has been a blessing to Wilcox , making us well-equipped to train staff and improve care for all of our patients here ,” Stearns said .
“ It was truly our pleasure to do this for Wilcox , a medical center that our community is fortunate to have . We know firsthand how dedicated your doctors , nurses and entire staff are to the patients . Our community is blessed to have all of you looking out for us .”
