MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT & CHIEF
EXECUTIVE OFFICER RAY VARA
Dear Friends,
MOMENTUM. WE’VE WORKED VERY HARD THE
PAST FEW YEARS to create it for our organization
and I’m proud to report that, thanks in large part
to your generosity, Hawai‘i Pacific Health enjoyed
a very good year in 2017. Our new brand continues
to communicate the clinically-integrated nature of
our organization. Our high quality, strong market
presence and over 70 locations provide the utmost
in convenience for our valued patients.
We achieved several milestones in the past year,
significant among them was the opening of West
O‘ahu’s first comprehensive cancer center at
Pali Momi Medical Center. The 24,000 square foot
center provides coordinated cancer care including
diagnosis, treatment and support services, in
one convenient location for Central and West
O‘ahu residents.
At Kapi‘olani Medical Center, the state’s only
medical center specializing in the care of women
and children, we opened a new state-of-the-art
Emergency Department in the Diamond Head
Tower. Staffed with a team of board-certified adult
and pediatric emergency medicine physicians, the
new Emergency Department is twice as large as the
old facility with 14,000 square feet of space featuring
24 private treatment rooms, including two trauma
rooms and two triage rooms.
Also during the year we unveiled a new simulation
lab at Wilcox Medical Center. The new lab is the only
training facility of its kind on Kaua‘i featuring high-
tech manikins to simulate various medical scenarios
for training and education purposes. The manikins
can exhibit various symptoms and respond to the
treatment they are receiving.
Straub Medical Center performs about 2,000
lifesaving heart procedures a year. In addition to
highly skilled teams of specialists, our ongoing com-
mitment is to upgrade our cardiac facilities with the
latest technology. We continue to raise money for a
new Hybrid Suite which will be a combination cardio-
vascular catheterization lab and surgical procedure
room. Once completed in the Spring of 2018, the
state-of-the art facility can host both catheter-based
procedures and open heart surgeries.
All of these facility and service expansions are
designed to further our mission of creating a
healthier Hawai‘i. These projects and many more
like them would not have been possible without
your generous support. As a non-profit addressing
the critical health care needs of our communities
statewide, we count on each and every one of you
and the resources you provide to fulfill our mission.
We simply could not do what we do without all of us
working together as a team.
So on behalf of the more than 7,000 employees of
the Hawai‘i Pacific Health family, including our four
medical centers—Kapi‘olani, Pali Momi, Straub and
Wilcox—and our clinics and physicians statewide, I’d
like to extend a heartfelt thanks for all that you do to
support us. Rest assured we will continue to do our
best to help people lead healthier, happier lives by
providing high quality health care to all.
Sincerely,
Ray Vara
