Frank & Russie ’ s Little Big Adventures Chapter 3

It ’ s Saturday morning . I wake up early because we are all going to Stonehenge . My history teacher asked me to prepare a project about a popular landmark . After talking to Russie , we decide to take advantage of my visit in the country and explore the majestic prehistoric monument .
We have a long day ahead , so we make a couple of sandwiches and pack some snacks . It ’ s a frosty morning so we wrap up warmly and set off . Although we need to change a couple of buses , I look forward to the journey because we are going to another county . Did you know that England is divided into 48 counties ? Passing through Kent , Sussex and Hampshire , I find the scenery really beautiful . There is no snow but we feel the chill in the air . I promise my teacher to come back in the summer and see the English countryside in its full glory . Stonehenge is located in the county of Wiltshire and Russie explains that there are a few circles of stones scattered in the area . She adds that there is a tiny village nearby , called Avebury , which is surrounded by stones in various sizes . In fact , it contains the largest stone circle in Europe . It ’ s believed that pagan rituals were performed by Neolithic people there .
When we approach Stonehenge , I can see the huge stones in the green field . It ’ s astonishing . There are a lot of people so we patiently wait to get tickets . Meanwhile we also collect an audio guide . I ’ m aware that my English is not fluent but I ’ m determined to improve my Listening skills .
After getting our tickets , we get closer to the magnificent stones .
I am quite curious and ask Russie : “ When was Stonehenge built ?” “ This unique stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC , “ Russie explained . “ Why was it built ? “ I ask . “ There are many theories why Stonehenge was put there . Perhaps it was a religious place or a place for observing the stars and planets .” my teacher adds .
I notice that we are not allowed to get very close and Russie says that due to vandalism the authorities had to put fences around so that tourists do not destroy the stones any more . I continue my walk and decide to take some notes while listening to the audio guide . I want to impress my history teacher .
