Mineral makeup Q&A
So what is mineral makeup?
Why should we choose to use mineral makeup?
Mineral makeup is made of the purest inert ingredients that don’t contain
harmful irritants. The minerals used are undiluted, pure pigment with no
contaminants that give great, weightless coverage while becoming a
foundation, powder, SPF and concealer all rolled into one with the simple
sweep of a brush.
This question can only be answered with: “Why would you not choose
a cosmetic range that benefits the skin, allows it to function normally,
has an SPF to protect from both UVA and UVB, and looks fabulous?” It
speaks for itself.
Every day more women (and, increasingly, men) are choosing mineral
makeup over traditional cosmetics; the lightweight texture and layered
coverage gives a quick and versatile finish that suits men and women of
all ages.
How does it benefit our skin?
Minerals have various benefits to the skin and are ideal ingredients for
makeup as they are naturally coloured. Some minerals have sunscreens and
titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are among the best ones as they reflect light.
These particular minerals are also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. The
soothing and weightless nature of minerals means they can be used on the
most sensitive skin and are frequently used post surgery. All the formulations
are tested in a laboratory to ensure that they don’t block pores too.
Talc and parabens: what’s
lurking in your makeup bag?
Next time you pick up that makeup brush
consider this: many beautifully packaged
products in the marketplace actually
contain irritating and even damaging
ingredients such as talc, dyes, mineral oil,
parabens and even petroleum. La Touche
Beauty believes wholeheartedly in better
education - just because something says it
is ‘natural’ does not mean that it is naturally
good for you.
What is talc? Why is it a ‘bad’ mineral?
Talc is a very soft mineral mined for the production of talcum powder.
The powder is sold for use on human skin, and also used to add body to
paper, plastics, and paint. Talc is often associated with both serpentine
and amphibole forms of asbestos.
FD&C (food, drugs and cosmetics) dyes
The word ‘dye’ generally refers to a chemical compound, most often
of petroleum origin, which is soluble. When the initials ‘FD&C’ precede
a colour, it means that the colour has been approved by the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food, drugs and cosmetics. When
D&C precede the colour, it signifies that it can be used only in drugs or
cosmetics. FD&C dyes are derived from petroleum, or, historically, coal
tar, and some are also synthetic.
So, what should you avoid and what
should you look for when purchasing
makeup products?
The petroleum-derived dyes are often comedogenic, particularly the reds,
and are known to cause breakouts in the cheek area. Some of these
approved dyes are also known carcinogens. FD&C dyes are approved for
lip products, but not for use around the eye area.
