ARUNDEL CASTLE EXHIBITION SHOWCASES HISTORY
OF ARUNDEL GREAT PARK
Arundel Castle in West Sussex has launched its 2016 exhibition
showcasing the history of Arundel Great Park, marking what would be the
300th birthday of legendary gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
Brown is heralded as ‘England’s greatest gardener’, who raised the art
of English landscape gardening to its highest level, perfecting a form of
naturalistic layout, which was copied for three generations.
Arundel Park, created by the 11th Duke of Norfolk between 1789 and
1815, was inspired by Brown’s signature style. The park is an Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty encompassing 1,200 acres of open
downland adjacent to Arundel Castle, and part of the South Downs
National Park.
The castle’s exhibition displays documentation explaining the origins of
the park and its subsequent use by royalty including Queen Victoria’s
Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1897.
Designed by the 11th Duke himself without the aid of a professional
landscapist, the park is enclosed by a high flint wall with clumps and belts
of trees including oak, beech, ash and Scots pine.
Arundel Castle archivist, Dr. John Martin Robinson, commented: “Arundel
Great Park is a stunning example of the landscape style popularised by
Capability Brown, and this exhibition aims to inform visitors of its long and
fascinating history.”
Arundel Castle is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday,
Mondays in August and Bank Holiday Mondays until 30th October
2016. Admission prices start at £9. For more information, please visit

TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT FOR CHARITY
A summer photo competition, offering £1,000 prize money, has been
launched by Hastings Adventure Golf - one of the region’s most popular
family attractions. The competition will also help raise funds for a local
Hastings charity.
For this inaugural 'Big Summer Photo Competition', Hastings Adventure
Golf is calling for photographs taken in Hastings that fit in with the theme
of ‘Crazy Seaside Adventures’. The crazy golf complex of three 18-hole
courses has also pledged to donate £1 to the Winkle Club for each of the
first 500 photos it receives.
The winning photographer will receive £500; there’s a second prize of
£300; and a third prize of £200.
Simon Tompkins, manager of Hastings Adventure Golf, said: “This is
a great way of celebrating summer and everything that Hastings, as
a quirky seaside town, has to offer. So, get snapping and send your
photographs in to us; you’ll be helping a great local charity and you might
just pocket some extra cash.”
Formed in 1900 by Hastings fishermen to help the under-privileged
families of Hastings Old Town, the Winkle Club today supports a variety of
local causes.
To enter simply email your photo (one per person) and
your name to: [email protected], or visit
www.hastingsadventuregolf.com/summer/ for more details and the
terms and conditions. The closing date for entries is August 31st 2016.
