NEWS HISTORY MEETS ART AT EASTBOURNE’S TOWNER GALLERY Eastbourne’s Towner Gallery is delighted to present Recording Britain, an exhibition of nearly fifty watercolour paintings of the changing landscape of Britain during the Second World War. Set up by Sir Kenneth Clark at the outbreak of war in 1939, Recording Britain was a scheme intended to boost national morale by celebrating the country’s natural beauty and architectural heritage, as well as a memorial to the war effort. Selected from a collection of 1500 paintings, now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the show features artists such as John Piper, Kenneth Rowntree, Barbara Jones, and other emerging artists of the time. They were commissioned to paint places and buildings of characteristic national interest, and to document rural and urban environments, and precious buildings under threat from bombs and the effects of progress and development. Spanning the length and breadth of the country, from Yorkshire to Cornwall, Caernarvonshire to Norfolk, the exhibition celebrates the rich diversity of buildings in England and Wales in the late 1930s and early 1940s; from old cottages, farms, pubs, hospitals and churches, to naval relics, stables, stately homes, condemned domestic dwellings, industrial canals, mills, mines and quarries. Opening on February 6th, Recording Britain will run until May 2nd; admission is free. KENAGI MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY KICK-STARTS 2016 WITH NEW VENUE Kenagi Academy of Martial Arts has now moved its Saturday classes to Southwater Junior Academy, and is encouraging the local community to use the move to kick-start a healthy lifestyle for 2016. Teaching everything from kickboxing, selfdefense and weapons training in the morning, to family karate, Kata training, and Bunkai and Kumite kicks and drills in the afternoon, due to its convenient location, Southwater Junior Academy is now the home of martial arts for the local area. Sensei, Brian Redman, Kenagi trainer, commented: “The New Year is a great time to start a new healthy activity, so with a change in venue to Southwater Junior Academy, we want to encourage people in the local community to make a healthy change for 2016. As well as helping with overall fitness, martial arts also teaches discipline, and can therefore lead to a healthy mind as well. Karate is something that people of any age can learn, so it’s a great activity for families to do together, no matter what their ability.” 11 Family Karate will take place at 12pm every Saturday at Southwater Junior Academy.
