Things to Do Nymans Nymans was the country retreat of the Messel family, and is now one of the National Trust’s most loved gardens. With views stretching far across the Sussex Weald, this is a wonderful place to explore. Find hidden corners, stone archways, tree-lined avenues, and lush green countryside. Although the house itself is a partial ruin it is still beautiful and evocative, and needs to be seen. There is also a shop and a café on site. The Coach and Horses Since 1847 The Coach and Horses has served the communities of Danehill and Chelwood Gate. First as an ale house but now as a country pub and restaurant serving award-winning food alongside traditional pub classics. The traditional pub bars remain and are busy with not only locals but new faces lucky enough to have discovered the charm and quality of this Sussex pub on the edge of the Ashdown forest. Dishes include marinated bocconcini mozzarella, heritage tomatoes and romesco sauce; Sussex sirloin steak with garlic and herb butter, plum vine tomatoes, field mushrooms and hand cut chips; and Thai red mussel curry with grilled tiger prawns and wheat noodles. Families are welcome, and there is a tasty kids’ menu too. Borde Hill Gardens Haywards Heath seems to attract a plethora of gorgeous gardens, and Borde Hill is another excellent example. Ouse Valley Viaduct The Ouse Valley Viaduct (also known as the Balcombe Viaduct) is a remarkable feat of engineering. It was built in 1841 and measures 29 metres (96 feet) high and is made up of 37 arches. It took 11 million bricks to complete it, and it is now Grade II listed.
