Things to Do
Nymans
Nymans was the country retreat of the Messel family, and is now one of
the National Trust’s most loved gardens. With views stretching far across
the Sussex Weald, this is a wonderful place to explore. Find hidden
corners, stone archways, tree-lined avenues, and lush green countryside.
Although the house itself is a partial ruin it is still beautiful and evocative,
and needs to be seen. There is also a shop and a café on site.
The Coach and Horses
Since 1847 The Coach and Horses has served the communities of
Danehill and Chelwood Gate. First as an ale house but now as a country
pub and restaurant serving award-winning food alongside traditional pub
classics. The traditional pub bars remain and are busy with not only locals
but new faces lucky enough to have discovered the charm and quality
of this Sussex pub on the edge of the Ashdown forest. Dishes include
marinated bocconcini mozzarella, heritage tomatoes and romesco sauce;
Sussex sirloin steak with garlic and herb butter, plum vine tomatoes, field
mushrooms and hand cut chips; and Thai red mussel curry with grilled
tiger prawns and wheat noodles. Families are welcome, and there is a
tasty kids’ menu too.
Borde Hill Gardens
Haywards Heath seems to attract a plethora of gorgeous gardens,
and Borde Hill is another excellent example. Botanical heritage and
stunning landscapes make Borde Hill the perfect day out for horticultural
enthusiasts, country lovers and families alike. Created by Colonel
Stephenson Robert Clarke from seeds gathered by the Great Plant
Hunters of the early 1900s, the Edwardian Garden is renowned for its rare
shrubs and champion trees.
Ouse Valley Viaduct
The Ouse Valley Viaduct (also known as the Balcombe Viaduct) is a
remarkable feat of engineering. It was built in 1841 and measures 29
metres (96 feet) high and is made up of 37 arches. It took 11 million
bricks to complete it, and it is now Grade II listed.
Paolino Italian Restaurant
Paolino Italian Restaurant is a family-run business with over 25 years’
experience in specialty Italian cuisine. There is an amazing selection of
Italian and Sicilian foods available in this cosy, comfortable restaurant
including sardine al limone (filleted sardines in garlic salsa verde with
lemon and white wine, served with toasted bread), spaghetti Montanara
(Sicilian sausage pieces and porcini mushrooms in a garlic, basil and
cherry tomato sauce) and spada all’eolina (grilled swordfish cooked with
cherry tomato, capers, olives and garlic salsa verde) as well as a large
selection of freshly made pizzas.
High Weald Dairy
Have you ever wanted to see how a dairy really works? Visit the High
Weald Dairy just outside Haywards Heath and learn what goes into
making cheeses. Find delicious recipes or join a cheese-making course

Wakehurst Place
Open throughout the year, Wakehurst is the country estate of the
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The varied landscape is of international
significance for its beautiful botanic gardens and tree collections, as
well as for its science-based plant conservation and research. A feast
for the senses, Wakehurst features natural woodland and lakes, formal
gardens, an Elizabethan house (five unfurnished rooms) and the 21stcentury architecture of Kew's Millennium Seed Bank. Wakehurst marks
an international conservation milestone in 2010, having conserved seeds
from ten per cent of the world's plant species.Dining Out
