FOOD+DRINK THE BEST BREAKFASTS IN SUSSEX cont. ‘British’ menu may serve. Take our morning staple, the Full English. At Carluccio’s, this becomes a Breakfast Magnifica, swapping streak bacon for smoky pancetta and pushing out plum tomatoes in favour of sautéed mushrooms doused in herbs. Likewise, traditional toast can be swapped for panettone, the delicious Italian fruit bread that serves as an ideal vehicle for far too much salty butter, and the frittata is a hearty three-egg omelette served with mushrooms, ham, herbs, or all three. Everything is served with either rich Napoli, or smooth Milano coffee, naturally, but they won’t begrudge you a pot of English Breakfast if you’re not ready to go the whole Italian hog. RYE BOSUN’S BITE, RYE HARBOUR Sometimes simple’s what you want and Bosun’s Bite does simple, brilliantly – the plump, herby sausages and thick bacon rashers are excellent quality, the eggs aren’t greasy, and the toast is doorstep thick. Plus, they offer some really tasty vegetarian alternatives, which is an unusual and welcome touch for any (non)greasy spoon, and they’ll throw in hashbrowns, or chips if you want to ramp up the carbohydrate factor. If you’re feeling brave, take on the ‘Big Eat’ breakfast roll: a huge, buttered poppy-seed white roll layered with tomatoes, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, two hashbrowns and a fried egg. Then probably go and have a lie down. 38
