wonderfully therapeutic drive. Nothing to worry
about except enjoying the lovely heated seats,
listening to the crystal-clear DAB radio, and
enjoying the countryside.
I was interested to see that the CR-V can be
purchased as a 2-wheel drive option. I assume
this is aimed at those wishing to economise and
save petrol, but the 4-wheel drive model is also
very efficient, thanks in part to the Honda
technology that auto-switches the car to 2-wheel
drive when travelling on ‘normal’ roads. I drive a
diesel SUV of my own, but nonetheless I was
very impressed with the power available from the
CRV's petrol 2-litre engine, which is delivered
quietly and efficiently, allowing Honda to boast
an impressive 34mpg. For a big chap it's not too
shabby in the speed department, 0-60 in around
12 seconds.
Impressive amounts of boot space, along with
the ability to electronically fold the back seats
easily and quickly, make the CRV a very versatile

car, and every bit an SUV, with plenty of room
to throw in a couple of mountain bikes and head
for the forest.
Also worth a mention is the ability to tow with
the CRV. Caravanning has recently become the
new rock and roll (even I enjoy it, after all!) as
more people holiday in the UK.
One thing I know to be fact is that if you are a
serious 'vanner, it is essential to find a good car
to tow your 'van! Caravanners are a notoriously
vocal and opinionated lot (myself excluded of
course), and having trawled the various forums
and websites that they visit, the CRV is clearly
very popular with caravanners, in their welldocumented experience providing a good safe
ride with plenty of towing power, thanks to
Honda's standard ‘trailer stability" technology
and the option in the automatic car to press a
button and restrict the car to use only the three
lowest gears. The modern CRV has a very
reasonable towing nose weight capacity of

100kgs, which allows you to tow a good-sized
caravan with no trouble.
Like Clark Kent, sitting at his news desk sipping
a latte, or Peter Parker taking photos, the CRV
is a hero in everyday mild-mannered mode. I
have no doubt that if the forces of darkness,
snow, ice or mud arose, it would come to the
rescue and save the day every single time. The
CRV's classiness comes from the fact that it is
not nerdy and doesn't brag about what it can
do. Because it doesn't have to.
