Anne of Cleves’s 500th Birthday
Celebrations in Lewes
You are invited to celebrate Anne of Cleves’s
500th birthday at her house in Lewes. The
party on Sunday 27th September is to
celebrate her birthday on 22nd September
1515. You’ll get the opportunity to taste Tudor
food, play traditional games such as Fox and
Geese, quoits and other party games, have
a go at period crafts, dress up in traditional
costumes all to period music played on
traditional instruments.
Discover how the Tudors lived, worked and
relaxed at home in this wonderful example of
a late medieval timber framed Wealden hallhouse. The earliest parts date from the late
1400s, and there were further additions up until
the 17th century.
The pretty gardens are inspired by Tudor
planting schemes and contain traditional plants
including a medlar tree. The café and Tudor tea
garden have a separate access to the museum
which allows non visitors to come and enjoy
a drink and sandwich or piece of cake in the
setting of this beautiful former home.
The house also contains the Museum of Lewes
History and the Wealden Iron Gallery which
illustrates this local Tudor industry.
The house and gardens formed part of Anne’s
favourable annulment settlement from Henry
VIII in 1540, making her one of the wealthiest
women in the country. Before the house was
given to Anne it had briefly belonged to Thomas
Cromwell who had helped to negotiate the failed
marriage to Anne, shortly after he fell from the
King’s favour and was beheaded in July 1540
on the day Henry married Catherine Howard.
The party starts at 11am, is included in the
standard admission fee and all the family
are invited. So come join the party, see the
