charity Reebok Spartan Race Your Choice of Charity // 19 & 27 September As the name suggests, the Spartan Race is full of challenges to get your legs and heart pumping. The South London Sprint is a 5km (around 3 miles) obstacle race at Pippingford Park in Nutley, and you will encounter mud runs, trail racing, and 15 other obstacles. It’s for anyone aged over 14, although there is a junior race (for 5-12 year olds) as well. The South London Super (also on 19 September at Nutley) is the Sprint’s bigger brother, with 21 obstacles over 13km (8 miles), and the big daddy of them all is the South London Beast, taking place on 27 Sep. This one is 20km (12.5 miles) and has 26 obstacles to face. The races are timed and ranked, giving you the chance to compete not only against hundreds of other runners, but against yourself as well. The Reebok Spartan Race has over one million competitors each year across the globe, from American to South Korea and everywhere in between. You choose your own charity, the one that is closest to your heart, and go for it – it’s a challenge, but it’s worth it. Dragon Boat Race Rockinghorse // 27 Sep Rockinghorse is a Brighton based charity that has been going for over 45 years. It is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Unit (known as the Alex), and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU), and the money this charity raises goes towards life saving medical equipment, and gives the sick children the best environment for their needs. In September, the annual Rockinghorse Dragon Boat Race will be taking place again, and this is the perfect opportunity for you to gather a team (of 12-16 people) together for this sprint across the water at Brighton Marina. The minimum age to take part is 14. £100 registration fee per boat + £50 sponsorship per person www.rockinghorse.org.uk From £35 registration fee + sponsorship www.spartanraceuk.uk Chestnut Sussex 100 Cycle Ride Chestnut Tree House // 27 September Chestnut Tree House’s annual cycling event, the Chestnut Sussex 100, returns on 27 September. Choose between a 31, 64, or 103km distance (19.5, 39, or 64 miles) route and raise money for Chestnut Tree House so they can continue to care for children and their families. For those who enjoy competition, there is start and finish chip timing – why not see if you can beat your personal best whilst cycling for a great cause? Chestnut Tree House cares for 300 life limited children across East and West Sussex, but they want to do more, which is what this cycle ride is all about. £35 registration fee + sponsorship. www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk Family Santa Dash Bexhill Lions + Various Charities // 5 Dec In 2014, around £2,000 was raised for many different charities in the Santa Dash, and for 2015 the Bexhill Lions hope to smash that total. However you choose to do it (running, walking, jogging, pushing a buggy, in a wheelchair), this is a fun and festive way to raise money for charity whilst getting in the Christmas spirit. Outfits are provided, so no one will feel left out, and there are children’s sizes too! Very little ones will even get a Santa hat to keep their heads warm. £11 registration fee (£6 for children under 15) + sponsorship www.bexhill-triathlon.co.uk/santadash.html 91
