MOTORS Jeep GRAND CHEROKEE OVERLAND cont. Model tested: JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE OVERLAND Brilliant Black with Black Nappa Leather interior 250bhp 3.0 litre diesel engine On the road price new: £48,195 Power/torque: 250bhp Top speed: 126mph Acceleration: 0-62mph in 8.2secs Economy: 40.4mpg (combined) CO2 emissions: 184g/km Driving the Jeep is an experience I recommend. The 3-litre 250bhp diesel engine (on our test model) purred magnificently, and delivered all the power we would ever need. Given that this car was initially designed for those epic long US road trips, you will be pleased to learn that it still translates flawlessly to the much smaller, far more windy English countryside, giving quite a bit of driving pleasure on those bends and curves and, being a bona fide Jeep, this is no “soft-roader” for just the school run. Its off-road abilities are magnificent, easily enabling you to tow a gigantic caravan over any boggy campsite, or perhaps do something even more adventurous! The Cherokee boasts an 8 (yes 8!) speed automatic gearbox, which enables the car to cruise superbly on the motorways, and it is no slouch if you are in a hurry either; with 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds, and a top speed of 126mpg, this shiny Jeep is pretty fly for a big guy. Emissions aren't bad either for a larger car, weighing in at 146 184g/km, and you are promised something around 40.4mpg if you don't drive like an F1 driver. As a keen traveller, one of the things I truly love about the USA, is that wherever you go, everything is done to the very best it can be. There is a sense of pride, both in the past heritage and the present, and a clear optimism for the future. The Grand Cherokee Overland epitomises this timeless pride and quality, whilst bringing us a bit of the future, and as a result, is a truly superb car.
