FOOD+DRINK The Bickley, CHISLEHURST Beautiful décor, a friendly welcome, and a great offer every Wednesday... It can only be Steak Night at The Bickley. B Y S A M A N T H A G It had been a while since my guest and I had ventured to the leafy suburbia of Chislehurst for dinner and drinks at The Bickley, and I was keen to see how it had evolved since its refurbishment and change of management last summer. Upon entering the main bar area, it was clear that the well-deserved revamp had worked wonders on this little gem of a building; cosy tables and booths with high-backed tweedfinished furnishings offer a traditional, refined environment. Round from the main bar is the first of the dining areas – which is more informal in nature – and the staircase that leads to the new and exciting multi-level dining experience. The result is impressive; smaller, and more intimate dining spaces spread over four floors means that whilst The Bickley is capable of catering for bigger parties, the dining space doesn't feel overcrowded. The finish is contemporary classic, accentuated by the natural light that floods in through the windows and French doors. Having been escorted to our corner table, we perused the main menu, which has been updated to include a variety of traditional pub classics, gastro pub newbies and sharing platters; however, it was a Wednesday, and my mind was made up – steak! Every Wednesday is Steak Night at The Bickley, and diners can enjoy 8oz rump steaks, chunky chips and a bottle of wine for an extremely reasonable £24.99 for two. It was evident when looking around that this is a popular choice amongst diners! When it arrived – following an ample starter of breads and oils and some salt and pepper squid in a light, crisp batter with a nice chilli mayo dip – the steak looked and tasted great. Juicy and cooked to perfection, the portions were hearty (which make a nice change from other steak night offers, which often result in smaller portions due to lower prices). The chunky chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle, the onion rings were delicious and huge, and there was a range of classic steak sauces to choose from.
