insideKENT exclusive interview with
CoCo and the Butterfields
IT ONLY TAKES ONE LISTEN TO A COCO AND THE BUTTERFIELDS' TRACK TO REALISE THIS
TALENTED, FOLK-FUELLED FIVESOME IS ON TO SOMETHING TRULY SPECIAL. HAILING FROM
THEIR BUSKING DAYS IN THEIR HOMETOWN OF CANTERBURY, COCO AND THE BUTTERFIELDS
WAS FIRST ESTABLISHED AS A HUMBLE FOLK TRIO IN 2011, BEFORE EMERGING AS THE
RENOWNED, COLOURFUL, ENERGETIC AND CROWD-STOMPING ACT THEY ARE TODAY.
With a unique sound and collective raw energy,
CoCo and the Butterfields is celebrated for its
rather brilliant fusion of folk, pop and hip-hop –
a genre that has since become known as Fip
Fok. Having gained a large and loyal national
following, in just three short years the band has
become one of the most celebrated groups on
the South East music scene, earned itself the
title of the UK's best unsigned act, drummed up
a quarter of a million YouTube hits, and shared
many a stage with numerous internationally
renowned artists. And this year has certainly
32
shown no sign of letting up, with the band's first
official tour, a summer of big festivals, and a gig
at Glastonbury on their ever-expanding list.
Too often the term 'one to watch out for' is
thrown around, but in the case of CoCo and the
Butterfields, such a prediction is unambiguous.
One of the UK's top up-and-coming bands, this
homegrown five-strong grouping is set for
stardom and what's more, they are deserved of
every success.
