ARTS Discovering Palmer’s Kent: Samuel Palmer, Graham Sutherland and Paul Drury Mascalls Gallery, Paddock Wood 14th June – 23rd August 2014 In 1924, when a small etching by the obscure and forgotten artist Samuel Palmer was brought into the art studios at Goldsmiths College of Art, it sparked a mini revolt in the etching department. Two of the students, Graham Sutherland and Paul Drury, were so excited by the print that over the next decade they produced a body of exquisite etchings directly influenced by their admiration of Palmer’s visionary work and for the countryside in Kent where Palmer lived and worked. Ninety years on, an extensive selection of the pastoral etchings of Samuel Palmer, Graham Sutherland and Paul Drury will be on display at Mascalls Gallery close to the village that inspired the three artists. The exhibition will focus on the unique artistic link between the three artists and their affinity with the light and landscape of rural Kent. Discovering Palmer’s Kent will include the first ever showing of specially commissioned impressions of un-editioned etching plates by Paul Drury and a very rare Sutherland etching. In addition, letters and sketches will show the close working relationship between Sutherland and Drury and the direct influence of their friendship on their etchings of Kent. 29 Nathaniel Hepburn, curator at Mascalls Gallery, says: “We are particularly delighted to be showing these etchings in the setting that inspired all three artists. This exhibition continues Mascalls Gallery’s history of exploring the Kent landscape as a rich and diverse source of artistic inspiration.” The exhibition draws from loans from private and public collections across the UK.
