CHARITY
Pink Lady ® donates thousands of apples
to Kent charities in partnership with FareShare
Wateringbury-based Pink Lady ® , the UK’s most
popular apple brand, has partnered with FareShare,
the UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food
waste, to donate thousands of apples to charitable
causes in Kent during the summer months, helping
combat holiday hunger.
The appeal aims to combat hunger and malnutrition
amongst children and families over the summer, at
a time when families are facing greater financial
strain. Last year, FareShare supplied fresh food to
more than 700 holiday projects and the charity
anticipates demand will be even higher this year as
a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The apples, which will be supplied by Kent-based
Total Worldfresh from its Rumwood Green Farm
site in Maidstone, will be donated over the course
of July and August and will be distributed by
FareShare to charitable organisations and community
groups in Kent and across the UK.
Mike Cantwell, technical manager, at Total
Worldfresh said: “It’s a privilege to be able to support
the local community by working with Pink Lady ®
to provide apples to children and families in need at
such a critical time. Whilst Covid-19 has presented
many challenges, it has also seen our community
pull together and we felt it was vital to be part of
that effort to help those who need it this summer.”
Adele Fash, commercial manager at FareShare
added: “Demand for FareShare’s service has soared
since the coronavirus crisis and we are now serving
25 percent more organisations providing food to
vulnerable children and families. Getting good,
nutritious food to vulnerable people has never been
more vitally important, which is why we are grateful
to Pink Lady ® for their generous donation. Fresh
fruit is particularly valuable as we are committed to
providing as much nutritious, healthy food as possible
for the children and families who rely on these
donations.
“With millions of people experiencing financial
hardship and food insecurity due to the Covid-19
pandemic, this donation from Pink Lady ® will make
a big difference to the communities we support in
the Kent area.”
Shepherd Neame donates £4,000 to
Kent NHS community heroes
Shepherd Neame is donating £4,000
to the Kent NHS Community Heroes
charity to celebrate the successful
reopening of its online shop.
Britain’s oldest brewer, based in
Faversham, closed its brewery shop,
along with its pubs and hotels, on
March 20 in line with Government
advice. Its online shop also temporarily
closed during this time but reopened
on April 27 selling a limited range of
beers, wines and ciders.
To mark the occasion, Shepherd
Neame pledged to make a £1
donation to the Kent NHS
Community Heroes charity for every
case of beer, wine or cider ordered
online until the end of June.
Chief executive Jonathan Neame said: “When we reopened our online shop
back in April, it was important to us to do something to show our NHS workers
just how much we appreciate their selfless, dedicated efforts to keep us safe
at such a difficult time. We are delighted to provide this donation to such a
fantastic cause.”
Jo Treharne, head of engagement and campaigns for Kent Community Health
NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We would like to thank Shepherd Neame for
this generous donation. Our community NHS teams are facing the biggest
challenge in a generation, and these funds will help us to support their health
and wellbeing.”

Lockdown ‘Doortraits’
in aid of Demelza
Ashford-based
photographer Fiona
Beadle’s lockdown
family portraits have
not only captured a
unique moment in
family history, they
are now raising muchneed
funds for
Demelza. The project
began as a collection
of doorstep portraits
capturing the essence
of families in
lockdown, and
following the
completion of images
for her forthcoming book, Fiona is now visiting homes in the Ashford area
to take socially distanced portraits of families and households at the front
door, in return for a minimum donation of £10 to Demelza Hospice.
Tamsyn Clark, director of fundraising and marketing said: “During this
pandemic, many of the families we support are shielding and are extremely
scared about what this might mean for their children. Demelza has been
reaching out to the families we support and helping wherever we can – offering
virtual support, practical help as well as individual support as needed. We
are also continuing our end of life care service so should our families need us
at this most crucial point, we can provide this essential service.
By kindly donating, you are helping to support babies, children and young
people with terminal conditions, as well as their whole family, in order for
them to enjoy their time together for as long as they have.”
