TOWNSPOTLIGHT Spotlight on BROMLEY cont. High Elms Country Park At High Elms Country Park there are 250 acres of countryside to enjoy and explore – as well as a fantastic 150-acre golf course. There is a bit of everything here – woodland, nature centre, ice well, formal gardens, wildflower meadows, BEECHE (Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms), plus a lovely café too! High Elms Country Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Christmas Tree Farm Despite its rather festive name, Christmas Tree Farm is open all year round, and offers a lovely day out for the family. At just £4 for adults and £2 for children up to 16, it’s rather a bargain too! Come to the farm and have a go at feeding the animals (sheep, cows, alpacas, pigs and more) with special food purchased from the farm shop. In the colder weather why not sip a steaming mug of creamy hot chocolate from the kitchen, or have an ice cream in summer? Of course, nearer Christmas there is nowhere better to buy your tree from than right here! Bethlem Museum of the Mind Located in nearby Beckenham, the Bethlem Museum of the Mind was once the Bethlem Royal Hospital, founded in 1247. This was the first institution in the UK to specialise in mental health, and it is still in use today. The Bethlem Museum of the Mind was opened by Grayson Perry in 2015 and houses an incredible and thought- provoking collection of mental health archives and equipment. DINING OUT The Fireball Pizza Company The Fireball Pizza Company is somewhere you’re sure to enjoy. The pizzas are freshly made to order on site with utter care and attention, plus the variety of toppings you can choose from is fantastic. All the pizzas are cooked in an authentic wood-fired oven The Fireball Pizza Company 42 at 450°C (which means cooking times tend to be less than 90 seconds!). Once the pizzas are eaten you can enjoy some homemade ice cream too, or even some cheesecake. It’s simple, it’s tasty and it’s one of Bromley residents’ very favourite places to eat. Nam Thai Whether you enjoy a delicious meal in the restaurant or you decide to take it away to eat at home, the same amazing quality and wonderful taste will be yours. The food is created by Thai chefs who are highly trained, and the ingredients are high quality and authentic. The menu includes items such as pad pik pow (stir fried with mixed peppers, onion, chilli paste and spices), kaeng massaman (southern-style curry, turmeric- infused and hearty, simmered with coconut milk, potatoes and peanuts) and hoi malangphu (stir fried mussel with lemongrass, chill and coconut milk). Assos Restaurant The food at Assos is vibrantly and authentically Mediterranean. The menu changes often, giving you the chance to try a wide variety of delicious dishes which could include tarama (smoked cod roe with a smooth homemade creamy sauce), lamb sarma beyti (marinated minced lamb wrapped in bread with cheese and topped with tomato sauce, drizzled with butter, served with yogurt and rice) or mitite kofte (minced meatballs cooked in a red wine sauce). Madisons Madisons is a family-run, friendly restaurant in Bromley that was opened in 1996 and has remained popular ever since. There is a great kids’ menu, a delicious à la carte menu and a happy, party-like atmosphere for everyone who goes there. Food includes all the favourites such as barbecue ribs, nachos, a 16-ounce T-bone steak, butterfly Cajun chicken and you can even build your own burger from a variety of different meat and vegetable options. The Bromley Pageant of Motoring ANNUAL EVENTS The Bromley Festival of Speech and Drama // March This annual festival has been part of Bromley’s culture and heritage since 1928, and every year it gets bigger and better. With more than 1,000 hopeful entrants wanting to take part each year, being part of the Bromley Festival of Speech and Drama is quite the accolade. The Bromley Pageant of Motoring // June This is the world’s largest one-day motoring show and it incorporates over 3,000 classic cars in one place. Anyone who enjoys the look and feel of vintage motoring won’t want to miss this spectacular day out – plus there is food, entertainment and activities, too! Santa Dash // Nov If you have ever wanted to run 2km dressed as Father Christmas whilst raising money for charity and having a good laugh, the Bromley Santa Dash is most definitely the place for you to do it! TOP SPOT The Glades has been a permanent fixture on Bromley High Street since 1991, and we simply couldn’t be without it now. This welcoming shopping centre is home to 135 different stores from homewares to fashion to technology, and plenty of restaurants and cafés too. As well as all the shopping and eating that can be done here, there are often free events in the centre including Halloween fun and a Christmas winter wonderland complete with Father Christmas. DID YOU KNOW? Spam, spam, spam… The famous Monty Python sketch in which everything on the menu in a café consisted of spam in some form or another was set in the fictional Green Midget Café which was said to be located in Bromley.
