The May Day Festival runs from 5th to 7th May with a host of customs and activities for all the family to enjoy. Join the Lord and Lady of the May on the castle forecourt and see the crowning of the May Queen. Visitors are invited to dance around the maypole with brightly coloured ribbons intertwined. Meet the mythical Jack-in-the-Green and follow the Green Man from folklore in a traditional May Day procession through the gardens as he wakes up the plants for summer with the help of children and their magical May bells. The show is part of City Sound Project, one of the UK’s largest metropolitan music festivals, which takes place in Canterbury across the month of May with a programme of events and shows spanning multiple genres and disciplines from spoken word to modern dance, DJs and acts. 7.30pm.
