HEALTH+WELLNESS THE WORLD OF WATER JUST LIKE A PLANT NEEDS TO BE WATERED REGULARLY TO NOT ONLY SURVIVE, BUT TO GROW AND THRIVE, SO TOO DO PEOPLE. AND, AS WE’VE BEEN TOLD TIME AND AGAIN, DRINKING WATER REGULARLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY KEEPS US HEALTHY, MAKES US FEEL BETTER, GIVES US A SPARKLE IN OUR EYES AND A SPRING IN OUR STEPS. This is advice we should not ignore. Water may not have a distinct flavour, but without it, we’d be a lot worse off. If you’re not drinking enough (or any at all – and no, sorry – wine, coffee and fizzy drinks don’t count), then these benefits might persuade you to keep trying until drinking water often becomes a natural part of your lifestyle. The Benefits of Drinking Water • Drinking water helps to refresh your brain and keeps you more alert with higher concentration levels. You can focus better on any task at hand and you’ll be much more productive too. • Water also helps you to lose weight. This works in a couple of ways. Firstly, if you drink a nice big glass before a meal you’ll feel fuller and you won’t eat as much. Secondly, it is a natural appetite suppressant. Finally, it raises your metabolism so your body works harder (plus it has zero calories). • Having enough water in your diet is like having an easy, free detox. Water flushes out waste and toxins through your urine and sweat. It may not sound too pleasant, but when you realise that you have a lower chance of developing kidney stones and urinary tract infections we’re sure you won’t mind too much. • Your skin looks better when you drink plenty of water too. Your skin needs moisture (hence the prevalence of moisturisers available) to stay smooth and soft. Water replaces any missing moisture, so your skin looks younger and glowing. Water helps your body break food down properly so it’s easier to digest and constipation won’t occur. • Drinking lots of water throughout the day keeps your immune system strong and fights off diseases that would otherwise knock you down. • Dehydration is a common issue that causes headaches, back pain, fatigue, cramps, joint pain, and even migraines. The one and only cure for dehydration? Water. • On top of all of these physical health benefits, being properly hydrated puts you in a great mood, so it benefits your mental health too. Your body will be functioning as it should and your mind will be active and clear. Who could fail to be happy with that? • Constipation isn’t something that those who drink plenty of water have to worry about. 87
