FOOD+DRINK Slap-Up MOTHER’S DAY MEALS MOTHER’S DAY IS AN AMERICAN INVENTION AND DATES BACK TO 1908, ALTHOUGH IT WASN’T OFFICIALLY RECOGNISED AS A CELEBRATION UNTIL 1910. ANNA JARVIS, A HIGHLY INTELLIGENT AND COLLEGE-EDUCATED WOMAN WANTED TO DO SOMETHING TO COMMEMORATE HER MOTHER WHO HAD DIED THREE YEARS EARLIER. ANNA’S MOTHER HAD BEEN THE ONE WHO ENCOURAGED HER TO ATTEND COLLEGE IN THE FIRST PLACE, AND SHE HAD BEEN A PARTICULARLY SPECIAL AND CARING WOMAN. SO, ANNA CAME UP WITH THE MOTHER’S DAY CONCEPT, DECLARING THAT ALL MOTHERS SHOULD BE HONOURED, SINCE THEY ARE “THE PERSON WHO HAS DONE MORE FOR YOU THAN ANYONE IN THE WORLD.” The idea caught on quickly, and within two years of Anna Jarvis’s highly publicised memorial to Ann Jarvis, mothers were enjoying gifts and a rare day off to be pampered and looked after by their children, rather than t he other way around. Mother’s Day really is a lovely thing. Mums can sometimes get the short end of the childcare stick (even when their children are grown up with kids of their own), being ‘bad cop’ to dad’s ‘good cop’. Not only that, but they do tend to do the bulk of the school runs, supermarket shops, after-school activities…and so on. It’s only right that they get a special day all to themselves when they don’t have to think of any of that necessary but arduous ‘stuff’ and can just relax into the best bits of If that sounds like the ideal Mother’s Day for your lovely mum, look no further for restaurant-based inspiration than our list of fantastic Kent establishments to take mum out to on her very own special day.
