WEDDINGS 2018’ S MUST-HAVE Wedding Cakes PHOTOS © JEFF OLIVER PHOTOGRAPHY AN ESTABLISHED CAKE ARTIST RENOWNED FOR ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND DESIGNING BESPOKE-NOT-BUDGET CAKE CREATIONS, LISA PARKINSON AT BEACHCOMBER CAKES LTD HAS HER FINGER FIRMLY ON THE PULSE WHEN IT COMES TO WHAT’S FLYING AND WHAT’S FLAGGING IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WEDDING CAKES. WE ASKED LISA TO FILL US IN ON THE WEDDING CAKE TRENDS SET TO SOAR THROUGHOUT 2018. “‘Cakes as art pieces’ is one of the biggest trends predicted for 2018 and beyond and I personally couldn’t be happier,” says Lisa. “Here at Beachcomber Cakes Ltd, we are all about art in cake form and have been for 20 years now; it seems the world is finally catching us up! Art-inspired cake designs are so individual, unique and reflective of each couple, and are positively striking if made well. This style of cake can also be a great deal of fun and most certainly provides a talking point at any wedding. If you are holding your reception in an art gallery, we can make you a cake to resemble a piece of artwork that your guests then get to eat – how cool is that?” Fresh flowers to dress wedding cakes remain popular, but there is a distinct rise in the demand for handmade sugar flowers. A nod to tradition undoubtedly, however a ‘waterfall’ or ‘cascade’ of handmade flowers may look absolutely stunning but are hugely costly due to the man hours and skill required to create them, which is something to consider budget wise. Black is back and big is beautiful! Geodes (geological secondary structures which occur in certain sedimentary and volcanic rocks) are a trend that isn’t going anywhere fast. It has so much diversity and endless colour options, especially when teamed with a black marbled finish, which is a particular favourite of ours. Geodes lend themselves naturally to ‘showstopper’-sized cakes...think black, think bold, think big! In a similar vein, ‘Día de la Muertos’ – the Day of the Dead is coming forward as an alternative wedding style and is different, colourful and a little dark. Dessert/patisserie tables, with or without a cake centrepiece, expertly displayed and perfectly executed, will never fail to impress and please in equal measure. Exquisitely made, intricately detailed individual pastries; macarons; towering croquembouche; oriental inspired ‘moon’ cakes; ‘mini-mes’; even jellies and classic blancmange – what’s not to like? Offers so much choice for your guests, but expect to dig deep – this isn’t a cheap option and the price is reflective of the skill and man hours required to create and set this up. http://bakingbythesea.co.uk/ beachcomber-cakes // 0741 591 4192 The great and the good of the UK bakery world gathered for a black-tie event at the London Hilton on Park Lane on 6th September 2017 for the biggest award ceremony in the baking industry calendar. The Baking Industry Awards (essentially the baking BAFTAs) brought together hundreds of the biggest names in British bakery to recognise and applaud the people, products and businesses that have helped make the industry so great. West End TV star, Denise van Outen, hosted the event and, with a little help from representatives of the 11 category sponsors, presented finalists and winners with their awards. The event was the culmination of months of judging, tasting, visits to premises and interviews taking place across the country to determine the worthy winners. We’re proud to announce that Beachcomber Cakes were one of three cake companies listed as finalists for the category of “Celebration Cake Businesses of the Year 2017”. 48
