LONDON GETAWAYS:
THE HILTON PARK LANE
& GALVIN AT WINDOWS
BY SARAH GREEN
THERE ARE FEW NAMES AS SURE TO INSPIRE THE IDEA OF LUXURY AS THAT OF HILTON, AND
STEPPING INSIDE THE HILTON PARK LANE, NO ONE COULD BE DISAPPOINTED. THIS
PARTICULAR HILTON HOTEL IS EVERYTHING THAT IS TO BE EXPECTED FROM THIS MOST
FAMOUS OF BRAND NAMES, BUT THERE IS ALSO A UNIQUE LONDON CHARACTER ABOUT
IT ALL THAT REALLY BRINGS IT TO LIFE.
The rooms at the Hilton Park Lane are more
than simply comfortable. Whether in a
standard room or in one of the spectacular
suites, your view will be one of those picture
postcard scenes that are so famous across the
world (Hyde Park features prominently), and
no one could fail to be moved by just how
beautiful London really is.
Although a little more pricey than some other
hotels in the area, you certainly do get what
you pay for, and that added extra touch of
glamour and sense of being treated and
properly looked after is well worth every penny.
When in a lovely hotel such as this, a visit to
the on-site restaurant can be a hit and miss
affair – some establishments can rely on the
hotel’s reputation to bring in customers rather
than trying hard enough with their food and
drink selections. This is not the case at Galvin
at Windows, the Michelin-star restaurant
114
located in the Hilton Park Lane. Here the hotel
is a handy extra, but without it the restaurant
would still be a magnificent and highly
sought-after place to enjoy exquisite food in
London.
Located on the 28th floor of the hotel, those
spectacular views once more come into play,
and are the ideal backdrop to a meal here.
Daytime or evening, Galvin at Windows will
offer innovative, delicious food that you’ll want
to tell your friends about. Dishes include the
superb grilled mackerel with escabeche and
smoked paprika oil; tarte tatin of aubergine,
red pepper, courgette, sundried tomatoes and
onion purée; fillet of Scotch beef, foie gras,
mushrooms, truffle, braised leek and red wine
jus; and apricot savarin, pistachio, lemon
pearls and lime chantilly. There is also a
remarkable ‘menu degustation’, a seven-
course tasting menu that will give you a
mouth-watering glimpse into what chef Joo
Won really can do – and it is definitely
impressive.
This menu starts with an amuse bouche and
moves on through the courses until the grand
finale of dessert – and since the ingredients
are fresh and seasonal, you can visit multiple
times and never taste the same thing twice;
quite a feat when so many menus stick to the
same tried and tested dishes.
With a beautiful art deco interior that combines
perfectly with the modern interior of the hotel
itself, Galvin at Windows is the best way to
finish off a memorable day out in London,
and as you drift off to sleep in what must surely
be one of the most comfortable beds in
London.
