Gyan Shala, India: Schools in Slums

In 2012, Insaan began supporting Gyan Shala (gyanshala.org) in India, a unique low-cost, scalable, high quality, outcome-focused educational non-profit institution which operates in Gujarat (Ahmedabad, Surat), Bihar (Patna, Muzaffarpur, Bihar Sharif), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Kanpur, Farukhabad) and West Bengal (Kolkatta).

In 2015-16, Gyan Shala served:

• Over 45,000 students from Grade 1 to Grade 10, out of which 51 per cent were girls.

• It helped an additional 500,000 students through teacher training and material development for the Government of Bihar.

• Learning outcomes and test scores of Gyan Shala students are at least 100% superior to government schools in India.

• Gyan Shala measures itself against private élite schools to strive to improve educational outcomes of its students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

In the school year 2016-17, Gyan Shala provided education to 33,000 children, as the program in two cities in Bihar, namely Muzaffarpur and Bihar Sharif, was closed down, and expansion curtailed in Gujarat due to funding constraints.
