Insaan Group _ Annual Reports INSAAN ANNUAL REPORT 2018 | Page 7

To address this fundamental challenge, the Bridgespan Group and others call for big bet philanthropy or grants of $10 million or more to a single cause or group – easier to do with an aggregator of capital such as Insaan (I admit my bias).

Regardless of the choice of the cause or the group chosen, a long-term, pooled and sizeable commitment is game-changing. The Stanford Social Innovation Review has recently done research on how to do this and highlight some best practices such as providing growth capital, giving to an aggregator or intermediary, building a new field (AI for philanthropy, for instance), or building an endowment for a preferred institution (even a $5 million endowment would require a spend of US$250,000 a year – two new social investments a year in Insaan, for instance).

As we begin a new year, on the Persian calendar at least, in this world of exponential opportunity and inequality, I believe that Insaan’s catalytic philanthropy model coupled with big bet philanthropy could lead to a new story – a new story about our own lives shared with other humans on a similar journey.

Thank you for your continued support to Insaan.

With warmest wishes,

Farahnaz Karim
