Testing an Innovation: the Philanthropic Performance Statement (PPS)

There have been many valuable attempts at measurement of impact in the charitable sector at large, as well as efforts to rate, rank and reward charities, but many of these fall short of delivering a holistic view of a charity’s overall performance, as they often use limited metrics with little regard to the operating environment and strategy, or impact on end-users. This results in a system of false accountability, or potential mistrust between funders and charitable entities, a less than optimal scenario.

The following example of a Philanthropic Performance Statement seeks to assist charitable entities to remedy these weaknesses by offering a simple, easy-to-use, comprehensive and contextualized view of a charity’s impact, including its impact on the end-users.

Much like a financial statement delivers an overview of an entity’s health, the PPS is conceived to provide a quick overview of a charity’s health.

The aim is to: a) standardize and agree on the metrics and data points that matter, while leaving room for customization; b) avoid the requirement for charities to make repetitive submissions to funders in order to streamline cumbersome funding processes; and c) help donors or funding bodies more easily identify a match for funding.

The PPS includes the same four sections of the PAS, being developed:

Governance

Communications

Financial transparency

Impact measurement
