Ed and Judy Hemmingsen have owned and managed The Belfast Bay Inn for 5 years but they are not new to the hotel business. In 1980, they purchased a 19-room

motel in Bar Harbor, Maine, and transformed it into a 97-room AAA-Four Diamond luxury resort complete with indoor and outdoor pools, great room and earned AAA’s coveted Five-Diamond award for their restaurant. They sold that property after 21 years to retire to Belfast, Maine. They built their home and after 5 years of retirement said: “Now what?” They didn’t do retirement well. They heard about a commercial building for sale on Main Street in Belfast, purchased the pair of row houses and spent the next two and a half years renovating the building for what would become Belfast, Maine’s only AAA Four Diamond and Select Registry boutique hotel. The renovation to the three-level (with elevator) 1840’s Main Street building resulted in six large suites each with one king bed in the bedroom with a large living area and two large hotel rooms with 2 queen beds on the ground level. Some of the suites and rooms have a gas fireplace. All have air conditioning and amenities galore. There is a private guest parking lot and a European-style garden courtyard where guests enjoy a gourmet breakfast each morning in the summer. Breakfast is delivered ‘room service style’ to the suites and rooms on rainy days.

The Belfast Bay Inn is perfectly located on Main Street surrounded by shops, galleries and restaurants in the quaint seaside village of Belfast, Maine. Businesses are flourishing with old and new boat companies, salty lobstermen, and artisans and crafts people. The new Harbor Walk stretches over 1 mile along the waterfront. This well lit, beautifully landscaped and accessible pathway is perfect for evening strolls, early morning walks, runs or biking from the walking bridge called Armistice Bridge to Steamboat landing. The Boat House has an adjacent small public beach, a great place to launch your kayak. Sounds like an ideal place to plan your next getaway. Open year round.
