editor's note

a few of my favorite things

Mary Hughes, Editor-in-Chief

uxury is many things to many people. If you take a survey I am sure some would say diamonds and fine champagne and for others it can simply be something

simple like ‘more time’.

My mom had a great saying “ You can buy anything with enough money”, and she was right. Luxury to me is expensive things and it is also things that I never seem to have time for and that is, ME! We all suffer from having busy lives, juggling work, family, kids and so on. At this point in my life, I look around and take a survey of my life and I look at everything I own and think, ‘how did I get all this stuff? Where did it come from?” I clearly don’t need any more stuff; in fact I am trying to unload some of it. So moving forward I am devising a new plan of gift giving and indulgences for me for instance, if I can eat, smell, or drink it then I’ll give it as a gift or buy it for myself. Nobody needs more stuff. Over the years I have inherited things, I’ve bought things at auctions, shopping trips and some plain ‘I don’t know where that came from’. Thank goodness for websites that re designed to sell stuff. Consignment stores are great too, but each time I take things to unload, I seem to bring another one home. I’ve joined Facebook groups that buy and sell stuff I have to admit I’m addicted to those now too.

Before I purchase things now I ask myself, ‘Is that something I really need?”

When you’re painfully honest with yourself the right answer prevails. The reason I am rambling on about all this in our luxury issue is, things sometimes are about filling yourself up with. I have enough ‘things’ I wish I had more time for an expensive latte or eating a really good piece of cake to share with a friend. I bought a cashmere scarf once for $180 and thought I was out of my mind. In my defense I have worn that scarf about 180 times, I have even hand-washed it and it still looks new. So indulgence is a good thing, I just don’t make it a habit of it because that is what makes it feel luxurious, because it’s rare and deserved!
