Inns Magazine Issue 1 Vol 20 Spring Romance 2016 | Page 11

Majestic bluffs, rolling hills and a scenic view of the St. Croix River, create a picturesque backdrop for The Historic Afton House Inn. As the oldest historic building in Minnesota, its country charm of yesteryear sets the scene for an ideal romantic escape.

Innkeepers/Owners Kathy and Gordy Jarvis incorporate a flair for romance at the 19th Century inn where qualities of a bygone era blend seamlessly with modern amenities. The 25 individually decorated rooms feature king or queen beds, Jacuzzis and fireplaces, some with balconies overlooking the river and marina. Heritage rooms characterized by vintage treasures and replicas are enchanting in hues of blue and cream. Newer rooms display a European flair with bolder red and yellow tones.

R&R is the number one priority on your list of things to do at Afton House. “Our guests come here to relax,” says Kathy, who with Gordy, and their two sons Dave and Dan, will see to that. In the innkeeping business for almost 40 years, they are dedicated to ensuring your stay is special. “It is a labor of love,” she says.

Wine or champagne may be the most difficult decision you will have to make, giving you and your love plenty of time to focus on each other. Mouth-watering truffles made on-site, delicious breakfasts, gourmet meals, room service, in-room massages, and romantic boat cruises, are some of the package offerings tailored to ultimate romance to tantalize you and your special someone.

Three onsite restaurants offer a variety of options to suit your taste. Enjoy dinner by candlelight in the main dining room, casual fare at the bar restaurant, or the wine bar which has an intimate menu of appetizers, entrees, desserts and featured wines.

Afton House is close to everything you could want on your romantic getaway. Afton’s quaint atmosphere encourages leisurely outings at distinctive shops, a spa, museums, galleries and wineries. Adventure beckons along hiking/cycling trails, with an array of activities like skiing, boating, fishing and golfing nearby. “Our inn is uniquely located,” says Kathy. “You don’t have to go very far to get to sites and attractions,” she says. “It’s all right here.”
