Inns Magazine Issue 1 Vol. 18 Spring Romance 2014 | Page 28

Rick Litchfield and Bev Davis worked in advertising and met while working on the McDonalds account. They fell in love and while courting felt that there has got to be more in life than pushing hamburgers.

They spent the next year researching businesses that they could start together. They thought they’d like to be restaurateurs but kept finding restaurants for sale that had gone bankrupt. They visited Kennebunkport, Maine in March 1978 and saw some properties for sale.

The next day happened to be St. Patrick’s Day when they discovered the Captain Lord Mansion. It was springtime and the foliage was starting to come to life, they loved the potential of what they saw and felt the building could be better used as a bed and breakfast inn than the retirement home it was currently being used for.

On June 15th 1978 they became the proud owners of the inn and the following March 17th 1979 Rick and Bev tied the knot at their own Inn and this year they celebrate 36 years together.

The inn offers 20 accommodations and each one lends itself to romance, as every room is breath taking.

Most of their clientele come for celebratory escapes, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and honeymoons. The king and queen beds are draped with luxury linens and many rooms have double Jacuzzis.

Guests receive special touches like complimentary half splits of champagne and chocolates, birthday gifts of blueberry jam and Babymooners receive little stuffed animals for baby. Rick says the staff

attention to detail is outstanding; they remember guest’s names, special drinks they like and don’t hesitate to make a light lunch for someone who wanted to rest in their room for the day.

Bev believes the exterior of the inn is like another room, the gardens have beautiful Adirondack chairs, a water fall feature and a memory garden where guests who have visited the inn 10 or more times have their names on an engraved on a stone. Rick says there are over 600!

What better place is there to stay when the innkeepers themselves are romantics at heart!
